eBay Listings and Structured Data: What Actually Works

You cannot put schema markup inside an eBay listing; eBay strips every script. The structured layer on eBay is item specifics, an 80-character title and photos. Pair it with a brand site that points back using sameAs.

Schema markup cannot live inside an eBay listing. eBay's active content policy strips every <script> tag, including <script type="application/ld+json">, from listing descriptions, and the page it renders into already carries eBay's own Product markup. The structured layer on eBay is item specifics, the 80-character title, condition, photos, returns and handling time. For engines that read the open web, pair the listing with a brand-owned page that carries the schema and points to the eBay item.

Why your JSON-LD disappears

eBay's JavaScript policy is explicit: "Active content such as JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins, and form actions are no longer displayed in listings", and new listings that contain it fail with a "Disallowed JavaScript/HTML Syntax" error (eBay JavaScript policy). The developer formatting guide repeats it: "All active content will be blocked/removed from a listing". HTML counts toward the description character limit, fixed-size objects are capped at 700 pixels, and external links are allowed only to images, product videos, freight services or legally required information, over HTTPS, with target="_blank" (eBay Trading API formatting guide).

A JSON-LD block is a script tag, so it is removed. Even if it survived, the eBay item page already has eBay's Product markup wrapped around your description, and a second Product entity would be a duplicate. Spend the effort elsewhere.

What is allowed in a description

Plain HTML and CSS: p, ul, table, h2, img and a (within the link rules above). That is enough to build the parts of a product page that AI search crawlers actually quote. eBay's public item pages are crawlable by OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, so a description written as an answer-first page is readable by ChatGPT and Perplexity even without markup.

Element Inside an eBay listing On your brand site
Product JSON-LD Stripped by policy Yes, one Product per page
FAQPage markup Stripped Yes, when the Q&A is visible
Spec table Yes, as an HTML table Yes, mirrored
FAQ with h2 questions Yes Yes
Item specifics Yes, eBay's own structured layer Not applicable
Organization sameAs to the eBay Store Not applicable Yes
Links to your site Not allowed Not applicable

The real structured layer: item specifics

Item specifics are eBay's schema. eBay's own optimisation guidance says "complete and accurate item specifics are likely to increase visibility", and names make, model, size, colour and style as the ones to fill (eBay listing tips). eBay's Best Match ranking uses the match to search terms, popularity, price, "quality of your listing - description, photos", completeness, return policy and handling time, and the seller's track record (eBay Best Match guidance).

Treat every required and recommended specific as mandatory. Fill them with values from your product spec sheet, not from memory, and use the same units you use on Amazon and on your site. Item specifics are what eBay's own AI tools, such as the Magical Listing tools that draft title, category, specifics and price from photos, read and write (eBay Innovation).

Titles, photos, returns and handling

The title is limited to 80 characters, and eBay's advice is to use them: "You've got 80 characters to use, so use as many as you can in your title" (eBay Seller Center). Use the length for the brand, product type, model, the two attributes shoppers search for, and a compatibility or size cue. Do not spend characters on words like "wow" or "look".

Photos: up to 24 are free. eBay asks for every angle and for flaws to be shown. Returns and postage should be stated clearly because both are Best Match factors and both are questions AI assistants get asked.

One more constraint shapes everything on eBay: there is no eBay listing feed into ChatGPT or Perplexity. Discovery off eBay happens only through eBay's public pages being crawled. And eBay's User Agreement effective 20 February 2026 bans unauthorised third-party buy-for-me agents, so eBay intends its own assistant to be the agent on its marketplace (TechSpot).

Writing the description as an answer-first page

With no markup available, the description's structure does the work. A pattern that reads well to shoppers and to crawlers:

  1. An opening paragraph of 40 to 60 words that states what the item is, who it fits, and the one attribute buyers ask about most.
  2. A spec table (table) with units, using the same figures as the item specifics.
  3. A compatibility list (ul) when the product has one.
  4. A FAQ of 6 to 10 real questions as h2 headings with short answers under each, drawn from past buyer messages and from the Q&A on your Amazon listing for the same product.
  5. Returns, handling time and what is in the box, in plain sentences.

Keep every number identical across the title, the item specifics and the description. Conflicts between fields are the most common cause of wrong AI answers on marketplaces.

The brand site plus sameAs approach

Engines reconcile the same product across marketplaces by matching GTIN, MPN and brand. Google's merchant listing guidance asks you to "include all applicable global identifiers", and the required Product markup is name, image and offers as Offer entries with a positive price and priceCurrency (Google merchant listing).

So give each product one canonical, crawlable page on a site you own and let it carry the schema the eBay listing cannot:

  • Organization with sameAs pointing to your eBay Store URL, Amazon Store, Walmart brand page and social profiles.
  • Product with gtin13 or gtin12, mpn, brand, and the same spec values as the listing.
  • offers as an array of Offer objects, each with a url and a seller, pointing at your own checkout and at the eBay item URL, with price and availability matching what eBay shows.
  • A visible FAQ with FAQPage markup, and a dateModified you actually update.

Put the GTIN and MPN in the eBay item specifics as well so the two records line up. ChatGPT and Perplexity can then cite the brand page and send the buyer to eBay, and conflicting price signals disappear. One caveat from Google: the merchant-listing rich result requires the page itself to sell the product. A pure "where to buy" page gets product-snippet treatment, not the full merchant listing.

Access without passwords

If an agency or freelancer manages your eBay listings, do not share a login. eBay supports delegated users through Team access in Seller Hub: My eBay > Summary > Account > Team access, add the person's name and email, tick the permissions (listings, orders, promotions, advertising), and send. Invites expire in 24 hours and the invitee needs two-factor authentication on (eBay multi-user account access). Nothing in that role touches bank or personal details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Product schema to an eBay listing in any form?

No. eBay removes all active content, and a JSON-LD block is a script tag. Microdata attributes inside the allowed HTML are not a supported or documented route either, and the surrounding eBay page already declares a Product entity. Use item specifics for structure on eBay and put schema on your own site.

What are item specifics, and how many should I fill in?

They are the structured name and value fields eBay attaches to a listing: brand, model, size, colour, material, compatibility and category-specific fields. Fill every required and recommended one with a true value from your spec sheet. eBay says complete and accurate specifics are likely to increase visibility, and its AI tools read them.

Does the 80-character title limit mean I should use all 80?

Use what the product needs, and eBay reports that titles over 60 characters sell more. Spend the characters on brand, product type, model, key attributes and a size or compatibility cue. Leave out promotional words and repeated terms.

Will ChatGPT or Perplexity recommend my eBay listing?

They can cite eBay's public item pages because those pages are crawlable, but there is no eBay feed into those engines. A description structured as an answer-first page helps. A brand-owned page with Product markup and an Offer pointing at the eBay item is the more reliable route to being cited.

Can I link from my eBay description to my website?

No. External links are limited to images, product videos, freight services and legally required information. Point the other way instead: your website's Organization sameAs and Offer url fields can reference the eBay Store and item.
